About Besania Sacco

The name Besania or Bethany in English has its origins in the bible. It is a place name, referring to a town near Jerusalem where Jesus often visited. It was a home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha, according to Mat. 21:17, Luke 24:50-51, John chapter 11 and 12. Besania is where Jesus ascended to Heaven after his resurrection. Besania therefore is associated with themes of resurrection, devotion and Jesus divine mission.

In early 1990s Scripture Union of Uganda western region under the leadership of Rev Dr Ben Tumuheirwe had acquired land in Mbarara city near Riheka Guest house and it was named ‘Besania’ because it had become a thriving discipleship and mission outreach center where praying believers would come to spend mornings, evenings and whole nights watching and praying.  When Besania praying believers increased, they were challenged to get together in fellowship, keep together purposely and act together in obeying God by serving people.

Christ transforms persons, families, communities and nations. In order to address the problem of persistent poverty in Christian families  and homes, the core team of Besania praying believers led by Nduhura Benson decided to form Besania brethren development association (BEBDA) with the aim of promoting the spirit of togetherness for purposes of development and fulfilling Christ’s mission of abundant life.

In 2007 Besania brethren development association (BEBDA) decided to form a cooperative society and it was registered as Besania cooperative savings and credit society Ltd. The main objective was to serve man holistically and fulfill Christ’s mission of abundant life. And serving man holistically is possible only when all three dimensions, spiritual, social and economic are addressed together without separating one from the other.

Christ gives us unique weapons of good will, trust, care, passion and respect which are needed to build social capital, moral leadership and promoting diversity to fight behavioral poverty that keeps our society in chains

Our identity – Besania cooperative savings and credit society is a bible based society and it is reflected in the logo

Vision – To be the leading cooperative savings and credit society in Uganda where people are stewards of resources for the benefit of all mankind

Mission– To provide both financial and non-financial services through member mobilization in order to fulfill Christ’s mission of abundant life using holistic approach to development through social, economic and spiritual dimensions

Core values– Good will, Trust, Care, Passion and Respect

Objectives-

  • To provide financial services through savings mobilization and credit opportunities for all the members in order to eradicate poverty
  • To establish community based and affordable credit fund for low income earners.
  • To identify and finance projects and schemes those that empowers women and youth and create employment opportunities
  • To provide skills in the following training needs, post-harvest handling, agriculture value addition chain, entrepreneurship, credit management, record keeping, integrated farming, and project management
  • To mobilize and organize communities and promote self-management and self-help projects
  • To identify and promote appropriate health friendly technologies for sustainable environmental, health and sanitation
  • To improve the health and social-economic wellbeing of poor people by reducing the incidence of water and sanitation related diseases through sustainable safe drinking water sanitation and hygiene practices
  • To provide technical and material support including training, networking and information exchange

Organizational Set Up

Besania cooperative savings and credit society is a member owned, member financed, member used, member governed and member controlled micro finance institution. The supreme authority lies in the general assembly of registered members. The general meeting elects the BOD of directors and empowers them to do the business on behalf of the members.

The general assembly also elects the supervisory committee to oversee the general performance of the organization and to ensure compliance with the laws, resolutions and policies are followed and implemented.

Membership

Membership is open to all people of good character and who are willing to uphold to the core values, vision and mission of the organization. Besania cooperative savings and credit society is thriving and growing strong with dedication and commitment to faithfully delivering affordable financial and non-financial services to people in Greater Ankole region and fostering gospel missions,  outreaches resulting in family and community transformation.
